Lake County, Michigan – Drivers across Lake County could encounter flooded roads as early as late Sunday night, with repeated rounds of rain pushing water levels higher into midweek.

According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and emergency management officials, a Flood Watch remains in effect through Wednesday morning as thunderstorms bring periods of heavy rain. Rainfall totals through Monday night could reach around 1 inch, enough to trigger rapid rises on small streams, creeks, and poorly drained roadways.

The greatest concern centers on low-lying areas and rural routes where drainage is limited. Roads near rivers and known flood-prone zones may see standing water develop quickly after heavier downpours. Similar conditions last week led to isolated flooding, and officials warn a repeat is likely, especially overnight when visibility drops.

Travel impacts could build quickly on secondary roads, with water covering pavement and creating hidden hazards. Emergency officials urge drivers to avoid any flooded roadway, turn around immediately, and use alternate routes. Nighttime travel poses an added risk as water depth becomes harder to judge.

Storm chances will continue through Tuesday, keeping the ground saturated and increasing runoff into waterways. Additional advisories or warnings may be issued if rainfall rates intensify or flooding becomes more widespread.
