Grand Rapids, MI – Flooding concerns are rising quickly across western Michigan, where repeated rounds of rain could push rivers out of their banks and flood low-lying roads through midweek.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, a Flood Watch is in effect through Wednesday morning for seven counties, including Mason, Lake, Osceola, Clare, Oceana, Newaygo, and Mecosta. Rainfall totals are expected to exceed 1 inch in some areas by late Sunday night, with additional storms Monday night through Tuesday night increasing the flood risk.

Communities including Ludington, Big Rapids, Fremont, and Clare could see creeks and streams rise rapidly, especially near poor drainage areas and low-water crossings. Portions of U.S. 10 and M-37 may become vulnerable to water over the roadway if heavier downpours develop.

The risk is being driven by multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms, not a single storm system, which increases the chance for excessive runoff and localized flooding. Rivers across west-central Michigan will need to be monitored closely as water levels respond.

Residents in flood-prone areas should prepare now by clearing drains, avoiding flooded roadways, and staying alert for possible Flood Warnings. The threat will persist through at least Wednesday morning, with additional alerts likely as rainfall continues.
