College Station, Texas – Streets across the Brazos Valley could begin flooding within hours Sunday afternoon as slow-moving thunderstorms set up over the region, dumping heavy rain at rates up to 3 inches per hour.
According to the National Weather Service in Houston/Galveston, a Flood Watch remains in effect through early Monday morning for Austin, Brazos, Burleson, Colorado, Grimes, Madison, and Washington counties. Forecasters expect widespread rainfall of 1 to 3 inches, with isolated pockets reaching 6 inches where storms repeatedly move over the same areas.
Cities including Bryan, College Station, Brenham, Navasota, and Columbus face the highest risk for rapid runoff. Low-lying roads, underpasses, and poor drainage areas could become impassable, especially along rural routes and feeder roads near creeks and bayous. Drivers along Highway 6 and Highway 36 should watch for sudden water rises after sunset.
Emergency managers urge residents to avoid flooded roadways and charge devices in case of localized power outages. Those in flood-prone zones should be ready to move to higher ground quickly if warnings are issued.
The heaviest rain is expected between late Sunday afternoon and the overnight hours, with additional alerts likely if storms stall.
