Grand Island, Nebraska – Fires could spread out of control within minutes across central Nebraska this afternoon as strong winds and extremely dry air combine to create explosive fire conditions through early evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect for Valley and Greeley counties until 7 p.m. Sunday, with west to west-southwest winds sustained at 15 mph and gusting up to 25 mph. Relative humidity levels are expected to drop as low as 15 percent, creating an environment where even a small spark can rapidly grow.

Communities including Ord, Greeley, and surrounding rural areas face the highest risk. Open fields, dry grasses, and roadside ditches are especially vulnerable. Fire officials warn that any outdoor burning, including trash fires or controlled burns, could quickly escape containment under these conditions.

Drivers along Highway 11 and nearby rural routes should also remain alert, as wind-driven flames could reduce visibility or threaten roadways. Residents are urged to avoid using equipment that produces sparks and to secure trailer chains to prevent roadside ignitions.

Conditions may briefly ease overnight, but similar fire weather concerns could redevelop Monday afternoon. Additional warnings may be issued if dry and windy conditions persist.
