Mellen, Wis. – Drivers along State Highway 169 could face water over the roadway within the next 24 hours as the Tyler Forks River rapidly rises toward flood stage near Mellen.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a flood warning is in effect for eastern Ashland County and northwest Iron County, where the river is expected to exceed flood stage early Monday morning. The river is forecast to crest near 9.8 feet by Tuesday, reaching minor flood levels that could impact low-lying infrastructure, including stretches of Highway 169.
The latest river reading was 6.66 feet as of mid-morning Sunday, showing a steady climb that will accelerate into Monday. Areas just north of Mellen, including Copper Falls State Park, are within the zone of concern. Local officials warn that even minor flooding at this level can push water onto rural roads and create hazardous travel conditions, especially overnight and during early commutes.
Residents are urged to avoid flooded roadways, monitor local alerts, and prepare for possible detours. Waters may rise quickly in low spots near bridges and culverts.
Water levels are expected to fall below flood stage by Wednesday evening, but additional advisories could follow if rainfall persists into midweek.
