Davenport, IA – Drivers along the I-80 corridor could encounter lightning and sudden downpours after sunset Monday, with stronger storms capable of damaging winds and hail expected to follow by Tuesday afternoon and evening.

According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities office, scattered thunderstorms will develop Monday night, mainly north of Interstate 80, with coverage ranging between 20% and 50%. While severe weather is not guaranteed at that stage, lightning and brief heavy rain could still disrupt travel from Cedar Rapids to the Quad Cities.

The more significant threat builds Tuesday into Tuesday night, when additional rounds of storms are expected to expand across eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois. Forecasters highlight this period as having the highest potential for severe weather, with a Level 2 risk in place across much of the region.

Cities including Davenport, Bettendorf, Moline, and Rock Island could see storms intensify during the late afternoon and evening hours Tuesday, with hazards including wind gusts near 60 mph and pockets of hail. U.S. 61 and I-74 commuters should plan for reduced visibility and sudden slowdowns during peak travel times.

Residents are urged to monitor updates, secure outdoor items, and have multiple ways to receive warnings as timing becomes clearer. Additional advisories are likely as storm chances continue through Tuesday night.
