Billings, MT – Outdoor plans across south-central Montana could be disrupted within hours as scattered thunderstorms develop by mid-afternoon Sunday, bringing wind gusts up to 50 mph and frequent lightning.
According to the National Weather Service in Billings, showers and isolated thunderstorms will expand across the region after 3 p.m., with the primary hazards tied to erratic wind gusts ranging from 30 to 50 mph. While severe weather is not widespread, any storm that forms could quickly intensify and create dangerous conditions for drivers and outdoor recreation.
Rain chances climb steadily through the afternoon, with Billings reaching near 65% coverage by early evening. Higher probabilities are expected farther east, including Forsyth and Miles City, where chances peak between 70% and 80% before sunset. Communities along Interstate 90 from Livingston to Miles City should prepare for sudden visibility drops and slick roads.
Localized downpours and lightning could also impact rural areas, including Roundup and Hardin, where storm development may be more scattered but still impactful. Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items and avoid open areas during lightning.
Storm activity is expected to taper later tonight, but additional rounds of unsettled weather remain possible early this week, with updates likely as conditions evolve.
