Illinois skies are shifting fast as warm winds sweep across open fields, kicking up dust and signaling a stormy stretch ahead for Champaign. Visibility may drop quickly on rural roads as gusts strengthen through the afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, south winds could gust up to 40 mph today, with blowing dust possible in agricultural areas and a few thunderstorms developing later. Minor flooding continues along the Illinois River near Havana and Beardstown.

Temperatures climb to 81°F this afternoon, but wind gusts near 40 mph will create tricky driving conditions along I-57 and I-72. Loose debris and sudden crosswinds could impact high-profile vehicles. Plan for firm steering and reduced visibility at times.

Storm chances increase into the evening, with a 70% chance of showers and thunderstorms. Rain could fall in bursts, making roads slick and slowing travel during peak evening hours. Keep headlights on and allow extra braking distance.

Monday stays warm near 81°F, with only isolated storm chances. However, the atmosphere remains unstable, setting the stage for a more active midweek pattern.

Tuesday becomes more concerning. Highs reach 83°F with a 60% chance of storms developing through the day. Some storms may bring heavier rain and gusty winds, especially during the afternoon commute.

The most widespread rain arrives Wednesday, with a 90% chance of showers and embedded thunderstorms. Repeated rainfall could lead to ponding on roads and minor flooding in low-lying areas.

By Thursday, rain chances ease slightly, but scattered storms remain possible. Looking ahead, warmer-than-normal temperatures continue into late week, reinforcing a classic spring storm pattern.

Stay weather-aware and secure loose outdoor items today. Driving later? Watch for sudden drops in visibility. What are conditions like in your area right now?
