Nebraska’s warm, breezy afternoon is quickly turning into a fire weather concern, with dry grass and strong winds creating conditions that can spread flames rapidly by midday. The air feels mild, but the risk is rising fast across open fields and rural areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, southwest winds are increasing to 20–25 mph with gusts reaching 40 mph this afternoon, while humidity drops as low as 25 percent. The most critical conditions are focused along and north of I-80 and west of Highway 281, especially between noon and 7 p.m.

Hastings will see highs near 83°F with partly cloudy skies turning mostly sunny. These warm temperatures, combined with dry vegetation, mean any spark could spread quickly. Avoid outdoor burning and use caution with equipment that may create sparks.

Monday brings another round of concern, with winds again reaching 20–25 mph and humidity falling near 20 percent. Some areas could approach critical thresholds again, particularly in south-central Nebraska and north-central Kansas.

By Tuesday, conditions begin to shift slightly as highs cool to around 79°F. A small chance of showers and thunderstorms develops later in the day, offering limited relief but also introducing lightning risk.

Midweek brings cooler air and scattered rain chances, helping reduce fire danger somewhat. However, until then, the combination of wind and dry air remains the primary threat.

Looking ahead, additional fire weather alerts may be issued if conditions persist. Are you seeing smoky skies or strong winds in your area today? Stay safe and report any fires immediately.

Tuesday: High 79°F, sunny, slight storm chance late
