Grand Junction, CO – Strong winds are already developing across western Colorado, with gusts expected to peak this afternoon and create hazardous travel and elevated fire danger.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, a Wind Advisory is in effect for northwest Colorado, where gusts between 45 and 50 mph are expected. Other areas cross western Colorado will see winds between 30 and 40 mph. The strongest winds will impact areas along U.S. Highway 40, Colorado 13, and Colorado 139.

These gusts could create difficult driving conditions, especially for high-profile vehicles, and may bring down tree limbs or blow unsecured objects. Combined with temperatures running 5 to 10 degrees above normal and dry conditions, the risk for rapid fire spread will increase through the afternoon hours.

Communities including Craig, Meeker, and Rangely face the highest risk, particularly in open areas with dry vegetation. Even small sparks could ignite fast-moving fires under these conditions.

Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, avoid outdoor burning, and use caution with any activity that could produce sparks.

The strongest winds will continue through the afternoon and ease later this evening, though fire risks may persist if dry conditions remain in place.
