Austin, TX – More than 3.5 million people across Central Texas face an immediate severe weather threat early Sunday, with storms capable of producing 70 mph wind gusts and hail large enough to damage vehicles.

According to the National Weather Service in Austin-San Antonio, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 8 a.m. Sunday for the Hill Country and Austin metro, including Travis, Williamson, Hays, and Bell counties. Real County remains under a separate watch until 4 a.m., indicating earlier storm impacts farther west.

Cities along the I-35 corridor, including Austin, San Marcos, and Killeen, could see rapidly developing storms before sunrise. Wind gusts up to 70 mph may down trees and power lines, while isolated hail up to quarter size could create hazardous driving conditions. An isolated tornado cannot be ruled out within stronger storm cells.

Key roadways including I-35, U.S. 183, and State Highway 71 may experience sudden visibility drops and debris from strong winds. Emergency managers urge residents to secure outdoor items and move vehicles into covered areas where possible.

Have multiple ways to receive warnings and be ready to take shelter in an interior room if alerts are issued. This storm threat will continue through the early morning hours, with conditions expected to improve after 8 a.m., though additional advisories may follow.
