Jackson, KY – Fire danger is increasing rapidly across eastern Kentucky this afternoon, as warm temperatures, dry air, and gusty winds combine to create conditions where fires can spread quickly.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, temperatures will climb into the mid to upper 80s today, with winds becoming breezy during the afternoon. Low humidity and dry vegetation will further elevate the risk, especially between 2 p.m. and early evening when conditions peak.
Communities including Jackson, Hazard, Pikeville, and London may see increased risk for fast-moving brush fires, particularly in open or wooded areas. Even small ignition sources such as discarded cigarettes or equipment sparks could lead to rapid fire spread.
Rain chances remain limited through much of the week, with only isolated showers expected and little meaningful rainfall to reduce dry conditions. Meanwhile, temperatures are expected to remain well above normal, with several days approaching record levels.
Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and take precautions with any activities that could produce sparks. Secure equipment and avoid parking vehicles on dry grass.
The elevated fire threat will persist through this afternoon and could continue in the coming days as warm, dry conditions remain in place.
