Oklahoma City, Oklahoma – Temperatures will surge into the lower 90s by Thursday afternoon, delivering a summerlike stretch of heat that will quickly dry out conditions across Oklahoma ahead of the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service and NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, Oklahoma is in a 70 to 80 percent probability zone for above-normal temperatures from April 16 through April 20. A broad heat dome over the Southern Plains will limit cloud cover and suppress rainfall early in the period, allowing temperatures to climb steadily.

In Oklahoma City and across Oklahoma, Cleveland, and Canadian counties, highs are expected to reach 90 to 93°F between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., with overnight lows holding in the upper 60s. Along the I-35 and I-40 corridors, dry air and strong sunshine will rapidly dry vegetation, increasing wildfire risk in open fields and along roadways.

Tulsa and northeastern Oklahoma will see highs in the upper 80s to near 91°F, while Lawton and southwest Oklahoma could peak in the low 90s during peak heating. Winds may begin to increase late in the period, adding to fire spread concerns before conditions shift.

The precipitation outlook shows near-normal to slightly above-normal rainfall developing late in this window, especially between April 18 and April 22, as a more active storm pattern begins to take shape across the Plains. This could bring heavier rainfall and thunderstorms following the initial heat.

Residents should avoid outdoor burning, stay hydrated, and limit strenuous activity during peak afternoon heat. Drivers should monitor vehicle temperatures and remain alert for gusty winds, especially on east-west roadways.

The most consistent heat is expected April 16 through April 19, with a transition toward stormier conditions beginning late Sunday into early next week. Additional advisories are possible as this pattern evolves.
