Atlanta, Georgia – Temperatures will surge toward 90°F by Thursday afternoon, creating immediate heat stress and rapidly drying conditions across Georgia ahead of the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service and NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, Georgia sits in an 80 to 90 percent probability zone for above-normal temperatures from April 16 through April 20, driven by a strong heat dome locking into the Southeast. This pattern will suppress rainfall and allow heat to intensify each day.

In metro Atlanta, including Fulton, DeKalb, and Cobb counties, highs are expected to reach 88 to 92°F between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., with overnight lows holding in the upper 60s. Along the I-75 and I-85 corridors, dry air and full sun exposure will quickly dry out vegetation, increasing wildfire risk near roadways and wooded areas.

Central Georgia cities like Macon and Warner Robins will see similar heat, with highs pushing into the low 90s. In South Georgia, including Valdosta and Albany, temperatures may peak between 90 and 93°F with very limited cloud cover. Coastal areas such as Savannah will remain slightly cooler in the mid to upper 80s due to a sea breeze, though conditions will stay dry.

The precipitation outlook shows a 33 to 50 percent chance of below-normal rainfall statewide, reinforcing dry ground conditions and elevating fire danger. Outdoor burning could become restricted if the pattern continues.

Residents should avoid burning, limit outdoor activity during peak heat between noon and 5 p.m., and stay hydrated. Drivers should check tire pressure and coolant levels, especially during afternoon travel on major interstates.

The most intense heat is expected April 18 through April 20, when a “much above normal” zone expands across Georgia and the Deep South. Additional advisories are likely as hot, dry conditions persist into early next week.
