La Crosse, Wisconsin – Drivers across Wisconsin could face sudden downpours and wind gusts near 60 mph after 4 p.m. Monday as scattered severe thunderstorms develop and track west to east into the evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, a Level 2 risk zone stretches from Madison to La Crosse, while a broader Level 1 risk covers much of the state, including Eau Claire and Green Bay. Storms are expected to intensify late afternoon, with about a 15% chance that some become severe, producing large hail and damaging wind gusts.
The highest impacts are expected along the I-90 and I-94 corridors, where visibility could drop quickly and ponding water may slow traffic. In Madison and Milwaukee, storms could arrive between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., aligning with peak travel hours. Western cities like La Crosse and Eau Claire may see storms develop slightly earlier.
Residents should secure outdoor items, charge devices, and plan for quick shelter if warnings are issued. Isolated tornado development and localized heavy rain cannot be ruled out, though wind and hail remain the primary concerns.
Storm chances taper later Monday night, but additional alerts could be issued if conditions intensify during the evening hours.
