Colorado – Dust could suddenly sweep across highways this afternoon as powerful wind gusts develop around scattered storms building near Denver.

According to the National Weather Service in Denver/Boulder, a few afternoon and early evening storms are capable of producing wind gusts between 40 and 50 mph, with isolated gusts reaching up to 60 mph. These storms may also kick up localized blowing dust and brief lightning, even with limited rainfall.

Across the Denver metro, including I-25, I-70, and E-470, visibility could drop quickly if dust gets lofted into the air. Drivers should be ready for sudden changes, especially on open stretches east of the city where winds can accelerate. Slow down if visibility drops and keep headlights on.

Temperatures are warmer today, climbing into the 70s and low 80s across lower elevations. That warmth, combined with dry air, is fueling instability for these storms. However, rainfall will be light and spotty, offering little relief to dry ground conditions.

Looking ahead, the concern shifts. Sunday and Monday bring elevated to critical fire weather conditions as winds remain breezy and humidity stays low. Avoid outdoor burning and secure anything that could spark.

By Tuesday, cooler air returns with a slight chance of light showers, helping ease fire concerns slightly.
