Tennessee – Winds are already beginning to pick up across Memphis, and the dry feel in the air is setting the stage for a dangerous fire weather setup that could escalate quickly by afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, a 40 to 69 percent chance of critical fire weather conditions is expected Sunday across much of the Mid-South. Low humidity, gusty winds, and dry vegetation create an environment where fires can ignite and spread rapidly.
By afternoon, wind gusts could approach 40 mph across parts of western Tennessee, eastern Arkansas, and northern Mississippi. Areas along I-40, I-55, and I-240 may see blowing debris and rapidly changing conditions if a fire starts. Secure loose outdoor items now and avoid activities that could produce sparks.
Across Memphis neighborhoods and surrounding counties, burn bans are already in place in many areas. Even small ignition sources like cigarettes, grills, or equipment can lead to fast-moving fires under these conditions.
Meteorologists now tracking this setup warn that fires could become difficult to control through the evening hours before winds gradually ease.
Looking ahead, the pattern shifts slightly but remains dry and warm. Temperatures climb into the 70s and 80s early next week, with continued low humidity at times. While fire danger may decrease slightly after Sunday, conditions will still require caution.
