New York – A cold, gray start is hanging over Buffalo this afternoon, but the calm won’t last long as a soaking rain pattern begins to take shape heading into early week.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures climb from the upper 30s this morning to near 48°F today with partial sunshine. Light winds keep conditions quiet for now, but moisture is already building just to the west .

By Sunday afternoon, rain begins to move in. Showers become likely after midday with a 70 percent chance, quickly turning roads slick across I-90, Route 33, and local streets. Visibility may drop during heavier bursts, especially closer to Lake Erie.

Conditions worsen Sunday night into Monday. Rain becomes widespread with an 80 percent chance, accompanied by breezy southwest winds between 21 and 23 mph, with gusts reaching up to 37 mph. That combination could slow travel and create ponding on roadways during peak commute hours.

By Monday night and Tuesday, scattered thunderstorms enter the picture. While not severe for most areas, brief downpours and lightning could still impact travel and outdoor plans.

Temperatures steadily rise through the unsettled stretch. Highs reach near 61°F Sunday, hold near 60°F Monday, then climb into the upper 60s Tuesday and near 70°F by Wednesday, signaling a warmer spring pattern despite the rain.
