Georgia – Dry air is tightening its grip across metro Atlanta this afternoon, and it only takes a spark to trigger a fast-moving fire in these conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, relative humidity is dropping to 25 percent or lower for several hours this afternoon into the evening. Winds remain light at 3 to 6 mph, but dry fuels and recent lack of rainfall significantly increase fire danger across north and central Georgia .
Across Atlanta, including areas along I-75, I-85, and I-285, grassy medians and wooded edges are especially vulnerable. Even routine activities like yard work or discarded cigarettes could ignite fires that spread quickly before crews can respond.
Temperatures are climbing to around 85°F under full sunshine, adding to the drying effect. Parks, construction zones, and suburban neighborhoods all face elevated risk during peak afternoon hours.
Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged. Avoid using equipment that produces sparks, and secure trailer chains while driving. If you spot smoke, report it immediately to local authorities.
Conditions ease slightly later this evening as humidity recovers, but the dry pattern continues into Sunday. Another round of elevated fire danger is expected as warm, sunny weather holds.
Looking ahead, temperatures stay above average with highs in the low to mid-80s through midweek. No significant rainfall is expected, which means dry conditions may persist.
