Cheyenne, Wyoming – Storms are expected to develop rapidly late this afternoon, with wind gusts strong enough to cause travel issues and localized damage across southeast Wyoming.
According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, a Level 1 of 5 severe weather risk is in place from 4 p.m. through 10 p.m., with isolated thunderstorms capable of producing wind gusts exceeding 60 mph. Some storms may also generate lightning and brief heavy rainfall, especially where cells move slowly.
Communities including Cheyenne, Laramie, and Torrington could see sudden bursts of strong wind, particularly along I-25 and I-80 where crosswinds may impact high-profile vehicles. In some areas, virga—rain that evaporates before reaching the ground—could enhance downburst winds, leading to sudden, powerful gusts without much rainfall.
Storm coverage will remain scattered, but any stronger cell could quickly intensify and create hazardous conditions for outdoor activities and travel.
Residents should secure loose objects, avoid open areas during lightning, and stay weather-aware through the evening hours. Storm activity is expected to diminish later tonight, but additional updates may be issued if conditions strengthen.
