Pueblo, Colorado – Storms are expected to rapidly intensify by early afternoon, with damaging winds and large hail threatening travel and outdoor activity across southern Colorado.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, scattered thunderstorms will develop between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m., with a Level 1 of 5 severe risk across the region. The main hazards include wind gusts exceeding 60 mph and hail at least 1 inch in diameter, especially along the I-25 corridor from Colorado Springs to Trinidad and east into the plains near La Junta and Lamar.

Lightning from these storms could spark new fires, particularly across the southeast plains where dry conditions dominate and rainfall may be limited. Roads including I-25 and U.S. 50 could see sudden visibility drops and hazardous crosswinds during stronger storms.

Conditions shift quickly Sunday, with dry air and gusty winds returning. A Red Flag Warning is in effect from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. for much of southern Colorado, including Pueblo, Walsenburg, and Trinidad. Fire danger will be high, with any ignition capable of spreading rapidly.

Residents should stay weather-aware this afternoon, secure outdoor items, and avoid activities that could spark fires on Sunday. Additional warnings are likely as both storm and fire conditions evolve.
