Austin, Texas – Storms are developing quickly across South Central Texas this afternoon, with heavy rain and gusty winds set to impact travel along the I-35 corridor through the evening hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Austin-San Antonio, rain chances range from 30% to 50% across the region today, with scattered thunderstorms expected to intensify through late afternoon and early evening. Some storms could produce strong wind gusts exceeding 30 mph along with brief but heavy rainfall capable of reducing visibility below one mile.

Cities including Austin, San Antonio, New Braunfels, and Georgetown are all in the path of scattered storm activity, with localized downpours likely to create ponding on major roadways like I-35, U.S. 290, and Loop 410. Southerly winds between 8 and 15 mph will add to already unstable conditions, especially during peak heating hours.

While storms remain scattered, any stronger cell could quickly disrupt outdoor plans and slow travel with lightning and sudden rainfall bursts.

Residents should secure loose outdoor items, avoid flooded roadways, and stay weather-aware through tonight. The unsettled pattern is expected to continue into next week, with additional rounds of storms possible and updates likely.
