Springfield, Illinois – Gusty winds and building storm chances will begin impacting central Illinois by Sunday afternoon, with stronger storms likely to develop by Tuesday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a prolonged warm pattern will push highs into the upper 70s and 80s starting Sunday, continuing through much of next week. Winds could gust between 30 and 40 mph at times, especially during the afternoon and evening hours, creating difficult driving conditions on open roadways like I-55 and I-72.
Scattered storms begin to develop Sunday, with a 30% to 60% chance of thunderstorms mainly south of I-55. By Monday, storm coverage remains scattered, but conditions turn more active Tuesday as instability increases. Highs between 82°F and 86°F will help fuel stronger storms, with a 40% chance of thunderstorms and the potential for severe weather across central and southeast Illinois.
Cities including Springfield, Decatur, Champaign, and Effingham could see periods of heavy rain, lightning, and gusty winds, especially during peak afternoon hours. By Wednesday, storm chances increase further to around 70%, signaling a wetter and more unsettled pattern.
Residents should secure loose outdoor items, remain alert for changing weather conditions, and monitor warnings as stronger storms approach Tuesday. The active pattern is expected to continue through midweek with additional updates likely.
