Aspendell, CA – Travelers and residents along the Eastern Sierra Slopes are facing a dangerous combination of heavy snowfall and 60 mph wind gusts as a potent spring storm system grips the region through 11 p.m. Sunday. The high-elevation terrain, including Whitney Portal and the surrounding ridgelines, is expected to see significant snow accumulations that will make travel difficult and potentially hazardous on mountain passes.
According to the National Weather Service in Las Vegas, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect across the Eastern Sierra. Meteorologists expect 3 to 7 inches of snow to accumulate between 8,000 and 9,500 feet, while elevations above 9,500 feet could see 8 to 12 inches. Locally higher amounts exceeding one foot are possible along the highest crests. While a brief break in precipitation is expected Saturday afternoon, a second, more intense wave of snow is set to move back into the area Saturday evening and persist overnight.
The primary concern for infrastructure lies in the high winds, which are forecast to gust as high as 60 mph. These winds will cause significant blowing and drifting snow, severely reducing visibility for motorists. Authorities warn that bridges and overpasses will likely become slick first, making mountain transit treacherous. Beyond road hazards, the intensity of the gusts could cause damage to trees and potential disruptions to local utilities in exposed areas.
Safety officials urge anyone traveling through the Eastern Sierra to slow down and maintain a large following distance. If you are outdoors, exercise extreme caution on stairs, sidewalks, and driveways, as ice can form quickly under these conditions. Before heading out, travelers should call 1-800-427-7623 for the latest road updates. The threat of slippery roads and high winds will remain a primary concern until the system clears the region late Sunday night.
