Goodland, KS – Drivers navigating the Interstate 70 corridor and regional highways across Northwest Kansas and South Central Nebraska must prepare for near-zero visibility conditions through 11 a.m. Saturday. Dense fog has settled heavily across the region, creating sudden whiteout-like conditions that make high-speed travel exceptionally dangerous between Kanorado and Quinter.

According to the National Weather Service, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect as visibility has plummeted to one-quarter mile or less in many areas. Impacted regions include major hubs like Goodland, Colby, and Hays, extending north into the Nebraska border counties of Furnas, Harlan, and Webster. Meteorologists warn that these conditions are expected to persist through the mid-morning hours, specifically targeting the Saturday morning travel window.

The heavy fog layer is currently blanketing critical infrastructure, including I-70, US-83, and US-40. Authorities from the Kansas and Nebraska Departments of Transportation urge motorists to significantly reduce speeds, as rapid fluctuations in visibility can lead to multi-vehicle pileups, particularly at highway onramps and intersections. Residents in cities like Norton, Phillipsburg, and Superior should anticipate delays if traveling before noon.

To stay safe, drivers are advised to utilize low-beam headlights only—high beams will reflect off the fog and further decrease sightlines—and to maintain at least four seconds of following distance behind other vehicles. If visibility becomes zero, pull completely off the roadway and turn off all lights so trailing vehicles do not mistake your parked car for a moving one. Conditions are expected to begin clearing by Saturday afternoon as the sun aids in burning off the moisture layer. Additional advisories may be issued if the fog bank fails to dissipate by midday.
