Ann Arbor, MI – An Ann Arbor home sustained significant heat, smoke and water damage Friday evening after a fire spread from one room into the attic, city fire officials said.
According to the Ann Arbor Fire Department, Shift 2 crews responded at approximately 6:17 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, to a reported structure fire on Colony Road near Eisenhower Parkway and Packard Road.
Engine 1-6 arrived and found a fire inside a single-story residence. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze in the room where it originated, but officials said flames had already extended into the attic.
Despite the extensive damage, firefighters were able to save numerous personal belongings from inside the residence, the department said.
No occupants were home when the fire broke out, and no injuries were reported in the department’s announcement.
Neighbors played an important role in reporting the emergency. Fire officials said nearby residents heard smoke alarms sounding inside the house and called 911 after seeing smoke coming from the property.
The incident highlights the role working smoke alarms can play even when residents are away, potentially drawing the attention of neighbors and helping emergency crews respond to a developing fire.
Investigators are working to determine the cause and origin of the blaze. The Ann Arbor Fire Department said the fire is not considered suspicious.
Officials did not provide an estimate of the financial damage or indicate when the residence may again be habitable.
