Lincoln, IL – Logan County officials will hold a public meeting in September to discuss projects aimed at reducing damage from severe weather, flooding and other natural or man-made hazards.
According to the Logan County Sheriff’s Office, the Hazard Mitigation Planning Committee will meet at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, at the Boardroom Event Space, 227 N. Kickapoo St. in Lincoln.
The committee began work in April to update Logan County’s All Hazards Mitigation Plan. Meetings are open to the public.
Logan County Emergency Management Agency Coordinator Josh Gasparini said severe weather has repeatedly damaged buildings, crops, roads and critical infrastructure across the county.
Officials said Logan County was included in 12 emergency and major federal disaster declarations through 2025. Hazard events in the county have resulted in at least 11 deaths, 26 injuries and $126.6 million in verified property and insured crop damage, according to the release.
The planning process is designed to identify preventative measures that can be completed before disasters occur. Those efforts could also help participating communities remain eligible for federal mitigation grants.
Potential projects include construction of community safe rooms, acquisition of flood-prone properties, drainage improvements and upgrades to critical infrastructure. Officials are also considering backup power systems and expanded public information efforts.
Gasparini said the goal is to identify actions that can protect public health while reducing financial losses before future hazard events occur.
