Chicago, Illinois – Drivers across northern Illinois could encounter rapidly worsening conditions between 1 and 11 p.m. Friday as thunderstorms capable of producing 60 mph wind gusts and half-dollar-size hail cross the Chicago region.

According to the National Weather Service Chicago, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected Friday afternoon and evening, with most of the region under a Level 2 of 5 severe weather risk. Isolated tornadoes are also possible, with the primary tornado threat west of the Fox River Valley. Storms should generally move east-southeast at 20 to 30 mph.

Chicago, Joliet, Aurora, DeKalb, Rockford and surrounding communities could see storms affect Friday travel. Strong gusts could down tree limbs, while large hail could damage vehicles and siding. Motorists using I-90, I-88, I-55 and other major routes should have multiple ways to receive weather warnings and avoid driving into severe storms.

The threat changes this weekend. Drier conditions arrive, but north-northwest winds will build waves along Lake Michigan and create dangerous rip currents Saturday and Sunday. A high swim risk is expected Saturday in Porter County, Indiana. Beachgoers should stay out of the water when swim restrictions are posted.
