INDIANAPOLIS – Drivers across central Indiana could encounter rapidly flooded roads beginning Wednesday afternoon as repeated thunderstorms drop 1 to 3 inches of rain onto ground already saturated by recent storms.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, a Flood Watch takes effect at 2 p.m. EDT Wednesday and continues through Thursday morning across 25 counties in central, east-central, north-central and west-central Indiana. Locally higher rainfall totals cannot be ruled out.
Thunderstorms are expected to repeatedly move across the same areas along a slow-moving front Wednesday afternoon and overnight. That pattern could quickly send runoff into rivers, creeks and streams, potentially pushing waterways out of their banks.
Indianapolis, Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville, Greenwood and Plainfield are covered by the watch. Lafayette, West Lafayette, Kokomo, Muncie, Anderson, Crawfordsville, Shelbyville and Greencastle also face a flash flood threat.
Motorists should avoid low-lying roads and never drive through standing or moving water. Residents near creeks and other flood-prone areas should monitor water levels and keep emergency alerts enabled overnight.
The Flood Watch remains in effect through Thursday morning. Flash Flood Warnings could follow where training thunderstorms produce the highest rainfall totals.
