Frankfort, IL – Businesses across the Chicago area are being warned about an alleged theft scheme after Frankfort police said a man soliciting donations distracted employees before taking money and an employee’s purse.
According to the Frankfort Police Department, officers responded at approximately 8:20 p.m. Tuesday to a business at 19989 S. LaGrange Road following a report of a theft. Police said an unknown man entered the business and told employees he was selling candy for a charity.
While employees were distracted, the man allegedly took money and an employee’s purse before leaving the business, according to police.
Investigators said they have since learned that an individual is allegedly committing thefts using the same method at various businesses throughout the Chicago area. Frankfort is in Will County, about 35 miles southwest of downtown Chicago.
Police released an image of a charity fundraiser flyer they said was used by the individual. The flyer promotes $10 donations, candy or gummies, mentoring programs and efforts to keep teens away from gangs, drugs and criminal activity.
Police described the suspect as a Black man believed to be in his late teens or early 20s. He was reportedly wearing a black T-shirt and blue jeans.
Authorities are urging business owners and employees who encounter someone soliciting in a similar manner not to leave cash registers or money unattended. Employees are also encouraged to keep purses and other personal belongings secured while at work.
The investigation remains active. Police asked businesses and employees to share the warning to increase awareness of the reported scheme.
