Michigan City, IN – Drivers traveling Interstate 94 through LaPorte County should prepare for overnight lane closures beginning this week, with construction restrictions planned between U.S. 421 and U.S. 20/35 near Michigan City.

According to the Indiana Department of Transportation Northwest, overnight lane closures are scheduled along I-94 between mile markers 34 and 40 during the next two weeks. Restrictions will be in effect from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

The first closures are expected for two nights beginning on or after Thursday, Aug. 20. Crews will remove the existing work-zone configuration and return traffic to the standard three-lane setup in both directions. Guardrail repairs will also be completed.

Another round of overnight restrictions is scheduled for four nights beginning on or after Wednesday, Aug. 26.

During that work, crews will install raised pavement markings. INDOT said I-94 will be reduced to one lane in each direction overnight, potentially creating delays for drivers traveling through the Michigan City area.

All three travel lanes are expected to reopen during daytime hours.

The work is connected to the full bridge deck replacement at Bleck Road over I-94, a project that has resulted in traffic restrictions in the area.

INDOT said the Bleck Road construction is expected to continue through the beginning of September. Restrictions on I-94 west of U.S. 421 will remain in place even after construction at Bleck Road is completed.

Drivers traveling between Michigan City, LaPorte County and the broader Northwest Indiana region should allow additional time during overnight hours and watch for construction crews and changing traffic patterns.

Work schedules may change due to weather or other construction conditions.
