Newark, DE – A Newark woman is facing multiple felony charges after she allegedly assaulted a Delaware State Police trooper during a stolen vehicle investigation in New Castle County.
According to Delaware State Police, the incident unfolded Wednesday around 6:15 p.m. when troopers responded to the Christiana Mall for a report of a stolen vehicle. Authorities said a Toyota Camry had been reported stolen and was later tracked to a residence on Jamison Street in Newark. Troopers located the vehicle and began investigating the scene.
Police allege that 36-year-old Rebecca Weatherly was observed entering the stolen vehicle and removing personal belongings from inside. As troopers approached and attempted to take her into custody, Weatherly allegedly resisted and struck a trooper, causing non-life-threatening injuries. Officials said she was then taken into custody without further incident.
During a subsequent search, troopers reportedly recovered keys believed to belong to the stolen vehicle. Weatherly was transported to State Police Troop 6, where she was charged with multiple offenses, including second-degree assault on a law enforcement officer, receiving stolen property valued over $1,500, and resisting arrest with force or violence.
She was later arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 2 and committed to the Delores J. Baylor Womenโs Correctional Institution on a $3,500 cash bond.
Authorities noted that all charges are allegations, and Weatherly is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law. The investigation remains ongoing.
