Chicago, IL – Drivers across northern Illinois could encounter flooded roads overnight as heavy rainfall moves in, raising water levels along rivers and creeks before sunrise.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, widespread rain totals near 1 inch are expected tonight, with locally higher amounts possible. The greatest concern is along and north of the Illinois and Kankakee River basins, where runoff could quickly lead to rising water levels and localized flooding.

Communities including Chicago, Joliet, Aurora, and Kankakee may see ponding on roads and water collecting in low-lying or poor drainage areas. While severe storms are not expected, embedded thunderstorms could produce brief periods of heavier rainfall, increasing the risk of rapid water accumulation.

Officials warn that even shallow flooding can make roads impassable. Drivers should avoid water-covered streets, especially overnight when visibility is reduced. Residents near rivers and creeks should monitor water levels closely and be prepared for quick changes.

Rain is expected to taper off by early Friday, with a brief break into Saturday. However, another round of storms is likely by Sunday into early next week, keeping the ground saturated and prolonging the risk of additional flooding.
