Dodge City, KS – Severe thunderstorms could rapidly intensify across northern Kansas late Thursday, with large hail and damaging wind gusts developing in time for the evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, a slight risk (Level 2 of 5) covers much of northern Kansas, with storms expected to strengthen after 5 p.m. A marginal risk extends farther south into southwest Kansas, where isolated severe storms remain possible. Initial development could begin as early as 2 p.m., especially near the I-70 corridor.
Communities including Hays, Great Bend, and Russell sit in the zone most likely to see severe impacts, with hail potentially exceeding one inch in diameter and wind gusts reaching up to 60 mph. Areas farther south, including Dodge City and Garden City, may see scattered storms, though coverage and intensity are expected to be lower.
Storms are expected to develop along surface boundaries and track east through the evening hours. Outdoor activities may be disrupted, and brief power outages are possible where stronger wind gusts occur.
Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items and remain weather-aware through tonight. Make sure alerts are enabled on mobile devices, as warnings could be issued quickly. Storm activity should weaken later tonight, but additional updates are likely as conditions evolve.
