Nevada – Dark clouds stack over the Sierra, and that mild spring air won’t last long as a sharp rain-to-snow shift targets Reno by the weekend.
Temperatures push near 69°F early, giving a brief warm and dry feel across Washoe County. That changes quickly as a colder system slides in from the Pacific.
According to the National Weather Service, rain chances ramp up Friday, reaching around 80% by afternoon and evening as steady showers develop across Reno and Sparks. Roads will turn slick fast, especially along I-80 and U.S. 395.
Rain continues into Friday night, but colder air begins lowering snow levels from around 7,600 feet toward 6,500 feet. Mountain passes may start seeing light accumulation.
By Saturday, showers remain likely with highs falling into the upper 50s. Winds pick up, and conditions turn noticeably cooler across northern Nevada. Plan for wet roads and reduced visibility.
Saturday night is the key transition. Rain mixes with snow in the Reno area as snow levels drop near 6,000 feet, then lower overnight. Slushy spots could develop on bridges and elevated roads.
Sunday brings lingering snow showers early, then a mix of rain and snow with highs near 48°F. Expect damp, chilly conditions and possible slick travel during the morning hours.
Drivers should stay alert, especially overnight into early morning periods when temperatures hover near freezing. That’s when slush can refreeze and create hazardous patches.
Conditions improve early next week with drier skies and a gradual warm-up returning by Tuesday.
