Illinois – Wet pavement and rising river levels are setting the stage for a messy stretch across Chicago, where rain is already building and flooding concerns are growing by the hour.

According to the National Weather Service, multiple rounds of showers and embedded thunderstorms are moving across northeast Illinois, with rainfall totals approaching a half inch in spots and more expected into Friday morning. Flood warnings remain in effect along the Des Plaines River near Lincolnshire and Gurnee, where water levels continue to rise.

Across Cook, Lake, and DuPage counties, roads like I-90, I-94, and I-294 could see ponding water during heavier bursts. Visibility may drop quickly during downpours. Drivers should slow down and avoid water-covered roads, especially near low-lying underpasses.

Rain intensifies later today into tonight, with precipitation chances peaking near 90%. While severe storms are not expected, steady rainfall could lead to localized flooding and swollen creeks. In McHenry and Kane counties, officials are monitoring the Fox River as water levels climb.

By Friday, showers taper but clouds linger. Temperatures fall into the upper 40s, making for a damp and cooler end to the workweek. Conditions briefly improve Saturday with partial sunshine and highs near 50°.

Another shift arrives Sunday. Warmer air pushes temperatures into the mid-70s, but breezy winds and renewed rain chances return by afternoon and evening, potentially slowing travel again.

Looking ahead, a warmer pattern builds into early next week, with highs climbing into the mid to upper 70s and periodic storm chances continuing.
