New York – Dry grass rustles and branches sway across the Capital Region this afternoon, where a dangerous mix of wind and low humidity is raising the risk of fast-moving fires right now.
According to the National Weather Service, a Red Flag Warning is in effect from noon through 6 p.m. across Albany, Rensselaer, and much of the Hudson Valley. South winds are increasing between 10 and 15 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph. At the same time, humidity levels are dropping as low as 20 to 30 percent, creating ideal conditions for fires to ignite and spread quickly.
Across Albany, Schenectady, Troy, and Saratoga Springs, the air feels mild with temperatures pushing toward 60°, but the landscape remains dry. Even a small spark—from yard debris, machinery, or a discarded cigarette—can quickly turn into a fast-moving brush fire.
Avoid outdoor burning today. Secure trailer chains, and delay any yard work that could create sparks. Fire crews remain on alert throughout the afternoon, especially in rural and wooded areas.
Conditions improve slightly by Friday as winds relax and temperatures rise into the upper 60s with a slight chance of late-day showers. That moisture will help reduce fire risk heading into the weekend.
Looking ahead, a cooler Saturday near 55° follows, then a rebound into the 60s Sunday. Early next week trends warmer, with highs reaching the 70s and even low 80s by Tuesday.
Five Day Forecast for Albany, NY:
Friday: Mostly sunny, high near 69°

Sunday: Mostly sunny, high near 60°, low 48°
