Rhode Island – A cold, quiet start is quickly turning into a higher-risk afternoon across Providence, where dry air and increasing winds are setting the stage for rapid fire spread. Temperatures began near freezing, and that dry chill is now giving way to stronger sunshine and a noticeable uptick in wind.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, southerly wind gusts between 20 and 25 mph will develop through the afternoon while humidity drops as low as 15 to 25 percent. That combination creates elevated fire weather conditions across Rhode Island and nearby Massachusetts, especially where dry leaves and brush remain.

By midday, temperatures climb toward the mid-50s in Providence, Cranston, and Warwick. Roads remain dry, but the concern shifts away from travel and toward outdoor safety. Any spark, including from yard work or discarded cigarettes, could spread quickly in these conditions.

If you’re working outside, avoid open burning and secure equipment that may produce sparks. Fire officials urge residents to delay brush burning and remain alert through the late afternoon when winds peak.

Friday brings a shift back toward more typical spring conditions. Highs reach near 61° with patchy morning fog in spots, especially along I-95 and coastal routes. By late Friday night, a 30% chance of showers develops, which may help reduce fire risk into Saturday.

The weekend looks calmer and seasonable. Sunshine returns Saturday near 60°, followed by upper 50s Sunday with increasing clouds.
