Spokane Valley, Washington – A 17-year-old boy was shot and killed Wednesday night after a confrontation with an armed driver along 16th Avenue, prompting a major investigation and road closures across the area.

According to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 8:10 p.m. to reports of a shooting near 16th Avenue and South Union Road. When crews arrived, they found the teen suffering from gunshot wounds and began life-saving measures until Spokane Valley Fire and AMR personnel took over. The teen was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say the suspect, an adult male, remained at the scene and was detained. Authorities confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Preliminary details indicate the teen, who was reportedly in crisis and making statements of self-harm, stepped into traffic, forcing a vehicle to stop. He then entered the passenger side of a vehicle occupied by four adults. Deputies say the armed driver confronted the teen and ordered him out, and the situation escalated, leading to the shooting.

No other passengers or nearby individuals were injured.

16th Avenue between South Pines Road and South Bowdish Road remains closed for several hours as Major Crimes detectives and forensic teams process the scene. The investigation remains ongoing, and the victim’s identity will be released by the Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office.
