Marion, Indiana – Drivers across central Indiana could see more flashing lights in their rearview mirror starting immediately, as law enforcement ramps up patrols targeting speeding and distracted driving through the weekend.

According to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, agencies including Gas City, Fairmount, and Van Buren police have joined forces with the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute to increase enforcement through Sunday. Officers are working overtime shifts to identify drivers violating Indiana’s hands-free law or exceeding speed limits.

The initiative comes as distracted driving continues to contribute to deadly crashes statewide. Officials say Indiana recorded 249 speed-related fatalities in 2023, with distracted driving involved in dozens more incidents.

Patrols will focus on key corridors in Grant County and surrounding areas, especially during peak commute hours and evening travel periods. Drivers along State Road 9 and nearby local routes should expect a heightened police presence.

Authorities urge drivers to put phones down, use hands-free technology, and maintain safe following distances. Even a brief distraction can lead to serious consequences.

The increased enforcement effort runs through Sunday, with the possibility of additional campaigns later this spring.
