Poughkeepsie, New York – Boaters across the Hudson Valley have a limited-time opportunity to get certified this month, with classes starting as early as 6 p.m. this week at the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit, an 8-hour Safe Boating Course is being offered on multiple dates in April at the agency’s community room. Sessions include evening classes running from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on select weekdays, as well as full-day courses from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays.
The course is open to anyone age 10 and older and covers essential boating laws, navigation rules, and on-water safety. Participants who complete the class will receive a New York State Safe Boating Certificate, which is required for many operators across the state.
Costs include a free course, with a $10 state fee for adults seeking permanent certification, while participants under 18 receive certification at no cost.
Officials encourage early registration due to limited seating. Additional sessions later in April may fill quickly as warmer weather brings more boaters onto local waterways.
