La Crosse, Wisconsin – Drivers along the Mississippi River could face difficult travel conditions within the next few hours as wind gusts ramp up to 45 mph by late morning.

According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, southwest winds will increase to 20 to 30 mph with peak gusts between 35 and 45 mph, strongest from late morning through mid-afternoon. Areas west of the Mississippi River, including La Crosse, Winona, and Prairie du Chien, are expected to see the highest impacts, especially in open and elevated terrain.

High-profile vehicles on roads like I-90 and Highway 61 may experience sudden crosswinds, while unsecured outdoor items could be blown around. Local officials urge residents to secure patio furniture, trash bins, and lightweight decorations before winds peak.

The strongest gusts are expected between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., with conditions gradually easing toward the evening commute. Power outages are not widespread but remain possible where isolated stronger gusts occur.

Winds will diminish later tonight, but breezy conditions may linger into Thursday as the region transitions into a more active weather pattern.
