Kansas City, Missouri – Strong southerly wind gusts up to 40 mph are already impacting the region this morning, signaling a major shift as multiple rounds of storms move in tonight.

According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, dry and mild conditions will hold through the afternoon with highs in the low to mid-70s. Winds between 30 and 40 mph will create difficult driving conditions, especially along I-70 and I-35, and could blow around unsecured outdoor items.

Storm chances increase rapidly after sunset, with the first round of showers and thunderstorms developing tonight and continuing in waves through the weekend. While the overall severe threat remains low, a few stronger storms Thursday night could produce hail.

Rainfall totals of 1 to 3 inches are possible across western Missouri and eastern Kansas, which may lead to river rises by the weekend. Flash flooding is not expected to be widespread, but localized issues cannot be ruled out.

Cities including Kansas City, Independence, St. Joseph, and Overland Park should prepare for repeated periods of rain that may impact travel and outdoor plans through Sunday.

Storm chances continue into early next week, and additional advisories may be issued as the pattern becomes more active.
