New York, NY – A sharp spring chill is gripping the city right now, with temperatures hovering near 30°F and frost forming across sidewalks, parked cars, and early morning surfaces.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, a Freeze Warning remains in effect until 9 a.m. Thursday, covering all five boroughs, Long Island, and parts of northeast New Jersey. Sub-freezing temperatures around 30°F are already impacting sensitive vegetation and could create isolated slick spots on untreated surfaces.

Across Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens, the cold has settled into low-lying areas and urban gardens. Staten Island and parts of Nassau County are seeing similar frost development. While major roadways like I-95 and the FDR Drive remain clear, shaded overpasses and less-traveled roads could briefly turn slick during the early hours. Commuters should stay alert, especially on bridges and ramps.

In New Jersey, areas like Hudson and Essex counties are also under the freeze, with similar risks to plants and early travel. Gardeners should cover tender plants immediately or bring them indoors. This is a critical moment for spring growth, and even a short freeze can cause damage.

Conditions improve quickly after sunrise, with sunshine pushing highs near 48°F later in the day. A gradual warming trend follows into Friday and the weekend, with highs climbing into the 60s.

Five Day Outlook for New York City, NY:
Thursday: Sunny, high near 50°F
Friday: Sunny, high near 62°F
Saturday: Becoming sunny, high near 61°F
Sunday: Sunny, high near 58°F
Monday: Mostly sunny, high near 71°F
