Greenville, South Carolina – Fire danger is expected to increase rapidly across northeast Georgia by early afternoon Wednesday, with dry air and gusty winds creating conditions where fires could spread quickly within minutes.

According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, relative humidity will drop to around 25 percent for several hours this afternoon across northeast Georgia, while wind gusts reach between 20 and 25 mph. This combination significantly raises the risk of fast-moving fires.

Areas including Toccoa, Clayton, and surrounding communities near the South Carolina border are under the greatest concern. Open fields, wooded areas, and dry vegetation will be especially vulnerable during peak heating hours.

Any outdoor burning could quickly get out of control under these conditions. Officials urge residents to check with local burn permitting agencies and avoid unnecessary burning altogether through the evening.

Winds will remain elevated into the evening hours before gradually easing overnight, but dry conditions may linger into Thursday.

Fire weather alerts could be expanded or extended if conditions persist, and residents should stay alert for updates through tonight.
