Miami, Florida – Heavy rain could flood streets across the east coast metro within hours Wednesday, with several inches of rainfall expected before conditions improve late tonight.
According to the National Weather Service in Miami, a Flood Watch remains in effect until 10 p.m. for coastal communities from West Palm Beach through Fort Lauderdale to Miami. Rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches are likely, with localized amounts reaching 3 to 5 inches, especially in urban areas with poor drainage.
Low-lying neighborhoods, underpasses, and streets prone to flooding could quickly become impassable during heavier downpours. Drivers along I-95, U.S. 1, and local roads should be prepared for sudden water-covered roadways during the evening commute.
In addition to flooding concerns, dangerous marine conditions are ongoing. Waves between 10 and 15 feet and winds gusting up to 35 knots are creating hazardous conditions for small craft, while a high risk of rip currents continues along Atlantic beaches.
Residents are urged to avoid driving through flooded roads and stay out of the ocean due to life-threatening surf conditions.
The flood threat will gradually diminish after 10 p.m., but dangerous beach and boating conditions are expected to continue for the next several days.
