Sturgeon Bay, WI – Residents across Door County are being urged to stay alert after scammers began impersonating sheriff’s deputies, pressuring victims for personal information under false legal claims.
According to the Door County Sheriff’s Office, callers are telling individuals they missed a court hearing and must provide information immediately, a tactic designed to create urgency and panic. Officials stress these calls are fraudulent and not connected to any legitimate law enforcement activity.
Authorities say the sheriff’s office will never call residents demanding court appearances or request sensitive personal details over the phone. Anyone receiving such a call should hang up immediately and avoid sharing any information.
The scam appears to be targeting multiple residents across the county, including areas near Sturgeon Bay and surrounding communities. Law enforcement is asking anyone who receives a suspicious call to report it directly by contacting the Door County Sheriff’s Office at 920-746-2400.
Officials warn that scams like this often increase without notice and can evolve quickly. Residents are encouraged to notify family members, especially older adults, and remain cautious as the situation continues to develop.
