Portland, OR – A magnitude 4.0 earthquake struck off the Oregon coast Tuesday evening, registering at a depth of 10 kilometers and prompting monitoring across the Pacific Northwest.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake occurred at 4:49 p.m. Pacific Time (20:49 UTC) roughly 44.65°N, 129.34°W, well offshore and away from major population centers. No immediate reports of damage or injuries have surfaced, and shaking on land is expected to remain minimal.

The offshore location reduces the risk of significant impacts for coastal communities such as Newport, Florence, and Coos Bay, though residents may have experienced light tremors. Emergency management agencies have not issued any tsunami warnings tied to this event.

USGS data shows a low probability of stronger aftershocks, with less than a 1% chance of a magnitude 4 or greater event in the coming days. Smaller aftershocks remain possible but are unlikely to cause disruption.

Seismic activity is common along the Cascadia Subduction Zone, and events of this size are typically not associated with major hazards. Monitoring will continue overnight, and additional updates will be issued if seismic conditions change.
