New York, NY – Temperatures will drop to freezing within hours across New York City, putting early spring plants and outdoor vegetation at immediate risk by midnight tonight.
According to the National Weather Service in New York, a Freeze Warning takes effect at 12 a.m. and continues until 8 a.m. Wednesday, with lows reaching 32°F in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens, and dipping closer to 30°F across the Bronx, Staten Island, and parts of Nassau County.
The cold snap will stretch beyond city limits into Hudson, Eastern Essex, and Union counties in New Jersey, where similar sub-freezing temperatures could impact residential areas and urban agriculture. Sensitive plants, especially those uncovered in community gardens or rooftop spaces, face damage or loss during the eight-hour freeze window.
Residents in neighborhoods from Astoria to Flatbush and across Staten Island should cover plants, bring potted greenery indoors, and avoid overnight watering that could lead to ice formation. While roads remain dry, colder pockets near bridges and waterfronts may briefly dip below freezing before sunrise.
Conditions improve quickly after 8 a.m. Wednesday as temperatures rebound, but additional advisories could follow if another cold night develops later this week.
