Washington, DC – A sharp overnight cold snap will send temperatures below freezing across the Washington region, creating frost and freeze conditions that could damage plants and sensitive outdoor plumbing before sunrise Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, a Freeze Warning remains in effect from midnight tonight through 9 a.m. Wednesday for Washington, D.C., much of Maryland, northern Virginia, and the eastern panhandle of West Virginia. Temperatures are expected to fall as low as 27 degrees in some areas overnight.
The cold will affect a wide stretch of the region, including Baltimore, Frederick, Rockville, Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria, and parts of Prince William County. Communities along the Interstate 95 corridor and across the Shenandoah Valley could also see freezing temperatures before daybreak.
Residents are urged to bring sensitive plants indoors or cover them with cloth to prevent frost damage. Gardeners and homeowners should also protect exposed outdoor pipes and disconnect hoses before temperatures fall overnight.
Another round of cold air is possible late Wednesday night into Thursday morning as a Freeze Watch remains in place across portions of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. Additional advisories may be issued if temperatures trend colder across the region.
